Advice Needed: How To Tone Down Bump Maps

This is my first stab at trying to create some bump maps for the external building. I've been following tutorials but no matter how much I try to tone them down, I'm still getting an overly pitted surface and while I want some hint at wear and tear this is looking far too ravaged. I've tried to turn down the bump value but it is locked due to the connection with the map, in order to change the value I have to break the connection meaning that the map no longer has any effect...
